‘Kin Hell Fest 2014 Preview: Friday

Welcome one and all to We Must Obey’s annual preview of this coming weekend’s ‘Kin Hell Fest. As those who’ve previously read our preview before, the drill is as such: we run the gamut of every band playing this festival, summing them up in a few words with images and links to their sites where you can follow them or check out some of their music.

This year, ‘Kin Hell Fest is bigger and better than ever. Being held in the 1400-capacity Vox Warehouse in Leeds, the festival has attracted the biggest names so far since the fest was founded in 2011. We are very proud to be supporting this festival again as we did in 2011 and in 2013, and together we will all make this a festival worth remembering. So without further ado, let’s get down to previewing Friday’s action.

Death Tripper – 14:00-14:25

Cracking young hardcore/d-beat/grind crew who first came to our attention here when they released a split with Nottingham vegan PV chums Meatpacker. A great way to kick off proceedings.

Ephemeral Foetus – 14:40-15:05

This Derby-based lot are a cracking band, mixing d-beat crust/thrash/punk riffs with raging societal intensity and aggression. They recently released a split with fellow Derby crusties Piss on Authority (‘Fallacy’), and if those three tracks are anything to go by, they be as relentless in their performance here as they show ‘Relentless Contempt for Man’.

Pist – 15:20-15:45

Super riff worship featuring a wealth of experience from the Mancunian scene. Pist will step up early on the Friday slinging tracks from their recent released debut ‘Riffology’. Heavy rock ‘n’ roll to raise a glass/plastic cup to.

Necro Deathmort – 16:00-16:30

London based duo Necro Deathmort are certainly one of the most intriguing additions to the line-up, bringing with them electro beats fused with doom vibes and industrial machinations. With a slew of releases behind them, their appearance here will herald a monolithic vibe; expect them to stand out.

Scottish brutal death metal merchants who will soon be releasing their debut album, and will arrive here to pummel your brains in with ridiculous riffs and carnivorous screams aplenty.

Haar – 17:30-18:00

In Edinburgh, a ‘haar’ is a dense chilly fog that blows in from the North Sea when the wind is in the east. Cheers Lonely Planet! It’s also home to an excellent progressive black metal band of the same name, producing music as murky and challenging as the conditions out at sea.

Evisorax – 18:15-18:40

Wigan grindcore berzerkers who have the backing of Scott Hull and J Randall of Agoraphobic Nosebleed fame – the former mastered their 2011 album ‘Isle of Dogs’ and the latter released it through his Grindcore Karaoke label. Their shows are known for being highly charged and confrontational, which is just fine with us.

Undersmile – 18:55-19:30

A rich, diverse, and quintessentially heavy doom band from Oxford, coming with the backing of Dylan Carlson (Earth) and Henry Rollins. High praise indeed. Ranging from titantically heavy to marvellously serene.

The headliners of the first edition of KHF are back! Expect huge slam pits for this lot who in 2013 stepped up their game with their brilliant LP ‘The Sorreption’.

Pentagram Chile – 20:40-21:20

Pentagram’s story from being one of the forerunners of extreme metal to releasing their debut album 28 years later still seems unreal. Yet Anton Reisenegger managed to pull it off after all that time and delivered the goods for the lost years of never making it happen. They’re about to land in town so prepare to get your heads banging away in appreciation of a band that Reisenegger refused to allow to die.

Napalm Death – 21:40-22:45

Do these guys really need an introduction? Oh go on then. The granddaddies of grindcore, Napalm Death have in their thirty years as a band redefined extreme music, taking down fascists, racists, policitians, warmongers, hypocrites, societal injustice, famine and more with their diatribes. Often imitated, never bettered, it’s truly a coup and a cause to celebrate that they are greeting this festival with their presence. If there’s a band this weekend you must not miss, it has to be Napalm Death.

Local merchants of hardcore/powerviolence/crossover style animosity, they emerged last year with our top-10 rated EP ‘A Hand of Sore Thumbs’ and are another of the highly rated reasons for you to ensure you turn up early on Saturday for the full attack. Shouting along to the chorus of ‘Sold Bowels (Saved Owls)’ should prove to be a weekend highlight, as will jumping in the pit for these.

Lock Up – 23:50-00:50

Closing out the Friday night will be an appearance by deathgrind supergroup Lock Up. Joining Shane Embury, fresh from performing with Napalm Death, will be the dream team of Tomas Lindberg, Nick Barker and Anton Reisenegger (also fresh from his Pentagram slot). This is the ONLY place you will see Lock Up in the UK this year. Make sure you don’t miss it!

Live Review: Corrupt Moral Altar @ The Packhorse, Leeds, 16/11/2013

+ DSDNT + Famine + Corinth

We made our way up the stairs of The Packhorse and edged along sideways into the top room as is necessary if more there’s more than ten people present at the Packhorse. We were already amidst the sounds of the first band Corinth, who contrasted to the blunt aggression and abrasive nature of the other bands. The songs travel through several different sub genres with a subtlety that keeps the sound of the band distinct, Crowbar-esque melodies complete with Windstein-esque vocal strains transcend into something more like the hypnotic rhythm of atmospheric black metal. The theme in the mutation of every sound; through the psychedelic, to the thrash injected, is a backbone of solid leaden doom, which keeps a satisfying power throughout the well crafted songs. Corinth are hefty as they are eloquent, like a terrible crushing river of through a lovely water colour.

After seeking some respite and drink downstairs, it was to our horror we found the bar area entirely ridden with the type of student that thinks it’s funny to dress up as Where’s Wally with a fucking inflatable beach toy wrapped around them. I fought my way past and hoped to God that come some over-priced generic cunt parade like ‘Carnage‘, the poor bastards would be ushered through the most shameless and faceless clubs of Leeds. After being forced into drinking copious amounts of dodgy vodka they would look into the abyss of their own souls, and decide to stop being pricks, or subject themselves to a lifetime of solitude.

There are probably not so many images out there that would set me up so well for the audio grit flinging of Famine, who launch into spats of super violence coming in at around a minute per bout, torn from an unsuspecting three piece. Pissed off as they come, simplicity is the biggest weapon. Bass that sounds like a wasp the size of a truck in a tin can buzzes angrily through the mix and drops into grooves like two gorillas playing swingball with a brick covered in nails. Dismay and frustration-addled vocal barrages are a dual assault tear their own rhythms’ into the grooves fuelling a furnace of complete terror. If we were not so nice or boring, the crowd would be gouging at each other’s eyes and hauling the clientele up from below to attack with our teeth. As it is, we stand subjected to pure fuel for everything great in chaos and stand still sweating for fear of inadvertently tearing the venue apart.

DSDNT are up next with a brand of hardcore soaked negative strained paranoid energy. The four piece churn out groove not too far from Napalm Death with the same style of raged punctuating vocals. This flies by in a dystopian vision; discordant, psychologically damaged jittering that keeps you on your toes whilst shredding in and out of minor abrasion and warped groove. The effect over all is a disturbing and edgy momentum that doesn’t stray too far but successfully obliterates any positive vibe you might be clinging too.

As student loans change hands and people attempt new personas with frightening intensity at the bar downstairs, a different more honest transcendence is ready to take place in the jammed-tight room above. Like the feeling of a thousand trapped nerves Corrupt Moral Altar aren’t something you can ignore; this is something you know whilst stood in front of the band, but it also explains their quickly earned popularity and reputation over the past year that’s also seen two releases. The audio violation is raw energy from the moment the band open up with a tirade of blood vessel popping shrieks and breakneck rhythmic dozing. It would be an easy thing to put CMA within the confines of grind, with the use of frequent barrages of bouncing intensity and relentless vocals, but the omnipotent charge that buzzes from the stage and your gut is created by the effective use of simplicity with creative rhythm. This comes from their homage to the word ‘sludge’, which is something far more local and refreshing than an identity crisis and southern drawl. The crushing Iron Monkey throwdowns are a key theme throughout the set which for made me wish that the gig had a different less confined environment, or that people cared a little less. It’s precisely the kind of thing you should be losing your shit to; as a crawl of malicious notes explode into a snarling, titanic groove. CMA feel like the kind of thing that doesn’t come around too often. Not that they’re doing something unheard of but for the fact it comes off with honesty and a vicious bile that’s good for the soul.

After a couple of titbits released via their Bandcamp page, ‘A Hand of Sore Thumbs’ marks the first full EP release for Leeds’ latest emergent from its thriving hardcore/powerviolence scene, Famine. And what a fabulous racket they make. Five songs make up this release, and its excellent that all have a bit of longevity to them – even at under 90 seconds, their songs are allowed to breathe and develop and that’s what’s part of why this release is so good. ‘Sold Bowels (Saved Owls)’ is undoubtedly one of the highlights, a fast burst, a blast section, and then the chorus which you’ll no doubt be busting your lungs to if you see these guys live. The expected fast/slow shifts are always present but Famine keep interest levels up with some phenomenal crossover-esque riffing and excellent vocal delivery. A great mix of hardcore, powerviolence and crossover elements to be had here, and Famine are offering it at name-your-price download, with tapes due on Reagent shortly. Go!

‘Kin Hell Fest 2014 – First 10 bands announced!

‘Kin Hell Fest 2013 was a roaring success and despite some of the financial issues arising from it in the end, these have now been cleared up and the fest is ready to go for its third edition, bigger and better than ever! ‘Kin Hell Fest 2014 will take place over the weekend of Friday May 02-Sunday May 04, with an additional pre-fest show taking place on Saturday April 26. A new venue has been confirmed, with the pre-show taking place at Eiger Studios in Leeds, and the full weekender at Vox in Leeds, promising 1400 indoor capacity, with the usual “food, booze, merch and carnage!” 

Over the past weekend, the first ten bands for the fest were confirmed. Let’s take a look shall we?

Once again, ‘Kin Hell Fest delivers, with some incredible names announced. Returning to KHF after delivering savage sets in 2011 are death-slammers Ingested and noisy sludge riffers Wizard’s Beard. Eight bands are announced for their first appearance at KHF, most notably acclaimed UKBM crew Wodensthrone, explosive grinders Evisorax, and seasoned death-slam crawlers Crepitation, while newer names also round off a stunning announcement – London industrial dirge duo Necro Deathmort, the pair of Leeds powerviolence dudes Gets Worse and fastcore/grind up and comers Famine, proggy Edinburgh black metallers Haar, and North-East black/deathcore quintet XisForEyes.

Tickets are not yet on sale, but its possible that early bird deals will appear towards the end of next month. Make no mistake, this is just the beginning of what will be yet another incredible line-up. 25 more bands are to be announced, including the headliners, as this incredible festival continues to grow.
