Catholic Girls – Distant

For all the hoo-hah over the legalisation of marijuana in the state of Colorado, none of this green haze gets in the way of the debut EP from Denver crew Catholic Girls. These six tracks of hardcore punk/rock have the sound of a band who could potentially go global. It’s not an inherently mainstream sound though it does have the makings of one, and if I can get down to describing the band in the lowest common denominator – as in, describing them as a mishmash of bands X have a bumfight with band Y in band Z’s living room – then think Cancer Bats if they possessed some of Trash Talk’s molotov rage. This band possess a melodic streak that doesn’t overbear, though it will dig into your ears at times, and at times they rage. ‘Sleepwalking’ is a particularly explosive tracks while at the former end, the closing ‘Piston’ (on the download only) rules thanks to its hooky chorus that if the band are given chance will surely explode moshpits across the world. This is excellent melodic hardcore with a punk n’ roll streak that will surely catch on and it would be a great injustice if it didn’t make everyone stop and look at least once.

Officially the vinyl and cassette is out on February 7th, 2014, but Crown & Throne Records have this available at their Bandcamp site for $5 USD (or the denomination of your choice). A worthwhile investment.
